Portugal-born immigrant children may become Portuguese as long as one of the parents is resident

Foreigners residing in Portugal for more than five years may also obtain Portuguese nationality.
Immigrant children born in Portugal may be granted Portuguese nationality. In practice, the Government grants Portuguese nationality to minors born in Portuguese territory, provided that one of the parents is resident in the country. At stake are the proposals by the PCP and the PAN to revise the Nationality Act, which were approved in Parliament earlier this month.
The PCP party proposes that Portuguese-born citizens may be granted Portuguese nationality, provided that one of their parents is a resident, and that “in the acquisition of Portuguese nationality by naturalization, Portuguese-born citizens may acquire it, without depending on their parents’ residence time in Portugal”, as stated on the Nationality Act.

The PAN party extends access to Portuguese citizenship to people born after the 25th of April, 1974 who “regardless of the title, had permanent residence in Portuguese territory at the time of birth and were not serving the Portuguese State, and to whom no original nationality had been granted”.
