The Lisbon City Council has recently approved a request for a requalification in Avenida Almirante Reis, which should include a hotel, tourist apartments, housing, commerce shops and services

The operation is divided into two instalments, intending to rehabilitate Cervejaria Portugália and the old Beer Factory in the north, involving the execution of expansion works through the construction of two new blocks for new housing, shops and services. For the southern area, the plan is to build a hotel with 165 rooms and tourist apartments.

The height of the various buildings will vary, never exceeding 8 floors and 26 meters. In total, the block will gain 98 new properties, in addition to 2,434 sqm of outdoor space.

    Meet Avenida Almirante Reis itself

Avenida Almirante Reis is part of one of Lisbon’s trendiest and coolest neighbourhoods, Arroios, which is a hub for art, hotels, and restaurants. What’s more, Avenida Almirante Reis is one of the most multicultural arteries of the city and also one of the few that still remains true to itself. Here you can still find traditional shops, but also specific spaces that take you to different parts of the globe. It is a faithful portrait of Nova Lisboa, where cultures and trends blend in.

It is also one of the most extensive avenues in Lisbon, with 2.8 kilometres, appearing in the extension of Rua da Palma, in Martim Moniz, and extending to Areeiro. This avenue feels as though a chronological line that allows one to see how the city has developed in the last century, in architectural, historical and socioeconomic terms.

Here’s a short itinerary for the best places to go to if you’re passing by Avenida Almirante Reis, or are thinking about purchasing property in this historical area of central Lisbon.

    1. Portugália Cervejaria

Almirante Reis' Portugália Restaurant was the first in the city and, in the beginning, it was just a space that sold loose beer. The success started to be so great that the concept quickly expanded to the rest of the country and all areas started to enjoy steaks and seafood - the famous steak with Portgáulia’s beer sauce is a must-try!

    2. Kingpin Books

With two decades of existence, Kingpin Books is the largest Portuguese comic book store, also assuming the role of publisher.

It is operating since April 2018 and here you can find the most notable authors of American, Japanese and Portuguese comics, as well as action figures, posters, T-shirts and other merchandising pieces.

    3. A Marisqueira do Lis

Although Ramiro is the most popular seafood restaurant in Almirante Reis, Marisqueira do Lis is also a quite remarkable space and is also family-friendly. Here seafood is always fresh, the meat is tender and succulent and the beer comes out with the right foam!

    4. Fábrica dos Bolos do Chile – Azevedo e Vidal

Founded in 1978, Fábrica dos Bolos do Chile is specialized in the trade and manufacture of traditional pastries and here you can have a custard tart or a warm bola de berlim in the middle of the night. Sometimes there is a long queue, but the wait is still worth it!

    5. Annapurna

Before the boom of exotic restaurants in the city, Annapurna already brought the best of Nepalese cuisine to Almirante Reis.

In Lisbon since 1997, it was the first restaurant of its kind and one of the spaces responsible for Portuguese people’s enormous passion for the world of spices. It continues to offer delicious meals, from traditional curries to grilled tandoori.

If you’re thinking about purchasing property near Avenida Almirante Reis, the area has preserved its original buildings and typical architecture englobing residential and commerce areas. Being a very attractive area for young families, students and young professionals offers a well-multifaceted atmosphere and the perks of living in the heart of the city, with amenities galore.
